Writing

Intent

At Horrington Primary School, we intend for our children to be passionate writers, who write with flare and creativity, to suit a wide range of genres, purposes and audiences. We intend to effectively support children and encourage them to develop their writing skills, following a progressive writing curriculum, informed by the National Curriculum (2013). We intend for our children to apply the spelling rules and grammatical terms, outlined by the National Curriculum (2013), when appropriate, within their writing. We encourage all children to take pride in their work and develop a legible, cursive handwriting style, by the end of primary school. We believe that the ability to write can effectively unlock endless opportunities throughout a child’s life and we wish to facilitate the development of writing skills in the most effective way possible.

Implementation

Daily English lessons are carefully and effectively planned to gradually develop the skills and knowledge needed to successfully compose writing to suit a range of forms and purposes. Across each term, each child will write two extended pieces of writing, one fiction and one non-fiction. There will also be opportunity for each child to write various independent, shorter pieces, throughout each term.

Within every year group, the children are exposed to a range of high-quality texts that inspire engaging writing opportunities. At Horrington Primary School, we undoubtedly value the relationship between reading and writing. The children have multiple opportunities to evaluate the effectiveness of high-quality texts, throughout each term.

Within all lessons, the children at Horrington Primary School, are exposed to a rich variety of language and are encouraged to use their knowledge of semantics and morphology to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words. Throughout the week, all children will take part in spelling lessons, supported by ‘Read, Write Inc’, which focus upon age-appropriate spelling rules.

Throughout each week, each child receives various grammar lessons, outlining grammatical features that are relevant to the form of writing being focused upon. Throughout the year, grammatical features are revised through the annotation of high-quality texts, establishing the effect of each grammatical feature on the intended audience.

Through constructive and considerate feedback, we ensure that children are aware of their strengths and areas for development in writing so that they can take ownership of their progress. To support every child, within Horrington Primary School, we also ensure that appropriate scaffolds and support are put in place for children who require it.

Our Trust

With origins lying in Fosse Way Special School, The Partnership Trust was formed in 2011 to enable close collaboration between schools across the area and was characterised by a diverse range of schools at different stages of their development journey.
